A gouache painting on paper of Marie Louise, Empress of France. This piece depicts Napoleon’s second wife Marie Louise, Empress of France and later, Duchess of Parma. This portrait is claimed to have been painted for the great illumination in Vienna on her wedding day to Napoleon Bonaparte. It is unsigned and cut out around Marie Louise’s outline, mounted on a creme-colored backing. An inscription to the lower right in ink reads ‘Marie Louise, Empress of France 1810-15, afterw. Duch. of Parma’. The piece is presented behind glass in a wood frame with wire to the verso for hanging.

Condition

- discoloration on painting; paper bowing upward; discoloration on backing; scuffs, wear, and paint missing on edges of frame.
