Carol J. Mathews Original Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas of the Number "3"
An original oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015) from her Number Series. The abstract geometric painting features the number ‘3’ painted in bright orange as the central focal point, surrounded by a bold red circle. The background is comprised of a symmetrical composition of triangular shapes, each rendered in a solid vibrant color. Numbers held specific meanings for the artist, and according to Mathews the number 3 references her three suicide attempts and represents fear as well as good luck. The work is unsigned, and is marked with the artist’s estate stamp to the verso. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed and ready to hang. A printed artist statement, and a list of numbers and their symbolic meanings in Mathew’s art are attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind. . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
