Japanese Woodblock Print on Rice Paper After Utagawa Toyokuni
Item Details
A Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print on paper after print designer Utagawa Toyokuni I (歌川豊国, 1769-1825). The print is from the series Actors Representing the Six Poetic Immortals (見立役者六歌仙) featuring the actor Rokō (路考), also known as Segawa Kikunojō V (五代目瀬川菊之丞) in the role of Komachi (小町). The actor wears a floral headdress and an elaborate kimono decorated with black cherry blossoms. The print and series titles are printed in a cartouche in the upper right corner. A poem occupies the space above the actor. The artist’s ‘Ko Toyokuni ga’ (故豊国画) signature is printed in the lower right corner alongside a kiwame censor seal and a Jōshūya Jūshichi publisher’s seal. The print is presented framed under acrylic.
Condition
- wear to the organic finish on the metal frame; overall fading to the print; small areas of holes to the paper along the upper mat line.
