Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Gentleman

An original antique oil painting on canvas of a gentleman. This portrait depicts the head and torso of a middle aged man in a dark jacket and white shirt. The features of the dramatically lit subject emerge from the dark background in a chiaroscuro style. The unsigned work is presented unframed. A label on the canvas stretcher to the verso reads ‘J. Davey & Sons’.

Condition

edge wear to canvas, some scratches to paint and canvas. Two areas reveal inpainting (with UV light), to the lower left and to the center of painting. An area to the lower lip of subject has been visibly retouched as well.
