Ink and Gouache Sketch in the Manner of William De La Montagne Cary

An ink and gouache sketch on paper study executed in the manner of well-listed American artist William De La Montagne Cary (1840 – 1922). This painting depicts a woman in late Victorian attire, seated at an outdoor easel under a parasol. The female artist-turned-model is shown creating a plein air painting of livestock resting under an old shade tree. The light colored gouache highlights illuminate the figure’s dress and parasol against the brown paper ground. The work is signed ‘Cary’ in the lower left corner by an unknown hand, and presented in a gold tone wood frame with black trim. There is a hanging wire mounted to the verso.
Condition
- to fair; paper cut through signature at lower left; hole to paper at center right to back of cow; cracks to white paint with loss particularly to areas of dress; discoloration to paper; chip to frame at upper right; minor nicks and wear to frame; tape to backing paper at verso.
