Bronze Sculpture of Antoine-Louis Barye's "Tigre Devorant un Gavial"

Item Details

Bronze

A recast bronze sculpture of a work by French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) titled Tigre Devorant un Gavial. This bronze sculpture depicts a tiger dramatically defeating and eating a crocodile. The work is inscribed in the casting ‘Barye’ on the lower surface and etched with a cast number to the underside. This particular composition is considered to be one of Antoine Barye’s most successful due to the tense, undetermined outcome for the crocodile. The original was shown in the Luxembourg Gardens at the Paris Salon and now resides in the Louvre. The sculpture is presented on an elliptical black wood plinth.
