Large Hand-Knotted Persian Kashan Area Rug

A large Persian Kashan area rug. This curvilinear wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of red, sapphire, cornsilk, and azure. It begins with an ogival sapphire medallion with multiple pendants at top and bottom. The medallion rests on a red field populated with images of palmettes, leaves, flowers, and swirling vines. Spandrels are grounded in sapphire and cream The field is framed by eight borders, including a stylized herati border of meandering palmettes over sapphire. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with ivory wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
