Skip Rowell Etching and Painting on Mammoth Ivory "Solitude"

Item Details

An etched and painted mammoth ivory titled Solitude by Native American artist Skip Rowell (Cherokee and Choctaw descent, 1943-), dated 2004. The work depicts a rider on horseback with fine etched lines and soft color. To the bottom right, the work is signed and dated. A metal plaque is adhered below the item with the title. The item is presented mounted on a dark fabric mat in a gold-toned wooden shadowbox frame.

Native American artist Skip Rowell is a descendant of both the Cherokee and Choctaw. His primary education was completed in Oklahoma and he received a degree in Commercial Art which lead him to join a design firm in Dallas, Texas. Eventually the outdoors-man made his way from the big city and back to the country where he began to work as a trade smith in leather working. Since 1984 Rowell has work as a full time artist and is known for his scrimshaw or traditional etching and paintings on bone or shell.

Condition

- some wear to the edges of the frame; inside of shadowbox could benefit from a cleaning; cracks to the surface of the painting; to the verso, some wear to protective backing.
