An oil painting on canvas of musketeers in the forest by listed French artist George Appert (1850-1934). A typical subject for the artist, this work features three musketeers armed and ready for oncoming battle in the forest. The composition is portrayed with loose painterly brushstrokes and is signed ‘G. Appert’ to the lower right. It is presented in an antique Barbizon style gilt and gesso wood frame with various foliate moulding patterns.

Condition

- painting has been cut and relined with canvas; some paint loss and rubbing along edges of composition; 3-inch mended puncture to canvas present to central left area; in painting present around mended puncture and to central right area of painting; wear to frame includes cracks, small chips, stains, and finish loss scattered throughout.
