An oil portrait on canvas attributed to Elizabeth Shoumatoff (1888 – 1980). This painterly work depicts the president with a serious expression on his face, his strong chin slightly raised and his gaze cast out toward the viewer. The figure has an unfinished look, with only his face and shirt collar fully rendered by the artist’s hand. The piece does not have a visible signature but bears a label noting the attributed name and title to its verso. It is mounted in a wooden frame with a wire for hanging.
Condition
- painting has heavy craquelure; there is a dent to the canvas to the lower left margin; UV light shows inpainting and an attempt at repairing the cracking paint on the face of the subject; heavy foxing and discoloration to canvas, particularly at verso; edge wear to frame.
