A mid-century oil painting on canvas titled L’Orgue de Barbarie by listed French artist Jean Francis Laglenne (1899 – 1962). The Expressionist-inspired work depicts a street musician turning the crank on a barrel organ decorated with floral and bird imagery in red, green and gold tone hues. The figure is shown standing on a sloped street, against a backdrop of city buildings and a gas lamp. The work is signed ‘Laglenne’ in cream paint to the lower right, with the title written to the verso of the top stretcher bar. It is presented without glass in a wooden frame with gold tone accent.

Condition

- to fair; UV light reveals inpainting at lower center, with canvas patch to verso; toning to painting and canvas verso; edge wear, nicks and accretion to frame; frame joints are not fully flush; no hanging hardware or backing paper.
