Chanson: Bust, 2004
Bronze sculpture
Inscribed signature, date, and edition number

A bronze sculpture titled Chanson Bust by Frederick Elliott Hart (American, 1943-1999), executed in 2004. Depicted is the bust of a graceful, ethereal woman with lyrical, windswept hair. To the verso is an inscribed signature and below that inscribed, ‘2004 F. Hart 62/65.’ Numbered edition 62 of 65. The sculpture stands upon a marble plinth. Presented with the sculpture is a laminated wood stand.

Hart is a revered master of contemporary sculpture combining traditional values of human form with rapturous movements and graceful beauty. Despite studying at the University of South Carolina, the Corcoran School of Art, and American University, Hart never received any degrees. He worked at the Giorgio Gianetti Architectural Plaster Studio in 1966 assisting sculptor Felix de Weldon (Austrian/American, 1907-2003). After taking a position in the mail room at Washington National Cathedral, he persuaded sculptor Roger Morigi (Italian/American, 1907-1995) to take him on as an apprentice. Hart established himself as a stone carver and began challenging the world of modern art sculpture.
