Mexican Ex-Voto Painting on Tin

A mid-20th-century Mexican ex-voto oil painting on tin. The work depicts the moment when a man riding on horseback is hit by a branch with the Virgin of Zapopan depicted in the upper left. The work remains unmounted and unframed.

The Spanish text at the bottom is roughly translated as; ‘Aurelio Martinez was running on horseback because he was late to see his girlfriend who had a very bad temper and he was going so fast that he didn’t see a low branch that hit him in the face and knocked him off the horse and he was grateful for not killing himself and that he only broke his nose, but it wasn’t that noticeable./ Grateful to the Virgin of Zapopan/ May 3, 1955.’

Condition

- light scratches and marks to the metal throughout; small stains present along the edges; some small areas of paint loss.
