A pair of mixed media paintings on gray paper of equestrian sporting scenes by listed British/Canadian artist John Alexander Harrington Bird (1846-1936). Comprised of gouache, watercolor, and charcoal delineations, each work features a man and woman riding horses, wearing sporting attire. Their horses are shown mid-gallop having already jumped over a fence or in the process of jumping over a fence, set in a countryside landscape. Both compositions are signed ‘H. Bird’, one to the lower left and the other to the lower right which is obscured by the mat. They are presented under glass with fabric-covered tan mats and housed in matching gilt wood frames.
Known for his paintings of sporting and equestrian scenes, John Alexander Harrington Bird studied at the Royal Academy in London. While living in Canada for a few years, he was an Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Academy. He returned to London in 1885, and continued exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and the the Royal Society of British Artists.
Condition
- one frame was opened for inspection; some rubbing and smudge marks along composition edges; minor toning along composition edges; some toning throughout mat; minor wear in frame includes scratches, stains, and spots of finish loss scattered throughout.
