A 19th-century Continental School oil portrait on board of a woman. This half-body portrait features a nearly profile view of an angelic young woman wearing a high-collared off-white dress, set in front of a retreated landscape; the woman gazes downward absorbed in thought, with a contemplative expression on her face. The work exhibits an ethereal haziness and subtle chiaroscuro, casting the woman’s face and the front of her body in shadow while illuminating her the back of head and arm. The work is illegibly signed with a monogram to the lower left. It is presented in an antique Louis XIV style gilt and gesso frame. Remnants of a frame label are present to the verso.
