A 19th-century Austrian School oil painting on canvas of a European Alpine village. This work features a rocky river running through a mountainscape, populated with quaint chalet-style architecture resembling a small Swiss village. A prominent mountain peak majestically occupies the background, silhouetted against a cloudy gray sky. No signature was found on the work. Handwriting to the frame verso dates the work to 1880 and identifies the composition as a product of the Austrian School. The work is presented in an antique Louis XV style gilt and gesso frame with undulating edges and scrolling foliate motifs in the corners.

Condition

- cloth loose-lining present underneath painted canvas; craquelure throughout painting; signs of restoration to painting with varnish; large spots of in painting scattered throughout composition; some rubbing and paint loss along composition edges; wear in frame includes small chips, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
