A mixed media sculpture titled After the Ball is Over by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2007. This work features an assemblage of tree branches and woven twigs painted in gray and primary colors. To the lower right, the composition is accented with an expressive abstract face rendered with watercolor and charcoal; also included is a printed image of a sculpture by the artist, mounted on cardboard and marked with the artist’s stamp. A descriptive label is adhered to the verso.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
