A mixed media sculpture titled Basket Head by artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), completed in 2006. It is from the Par-a-dise series. This work depicts a large face composed of ripped pieces of canvas, which is mounted on a canvas kite. An inscription on the kite reads, ‘Read My Lies.’ This work is rendered in acrylic, wood, canvas, and other found items. It is unsigned. Artist statement to the verso. Inscription to the verso indicating title, artist, and medium.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
