A mixed media sculpture titled Walt III part of the Dystopia series by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), created 2009. This work features an abstract face using a mixture of found objects such as a bicycle helmet, canvas, and twigs collage together with paint. An attached label provides the title, date, and dimensions of the work in ink. While not signed by the artist, the piece comes from the artist’s estate. Please note that the work is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity or provenance. To the verso, a wire is attached for hanging.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
