A mixed media sculpture titled Scratch & Sniff by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2006. This work features an assemblage of painted canvas fragments and a large web of painted branches and sticks. At the top of the composition is a framed illustration of male genitalia and a gorilla face, presented under glass. A descriptive label is adhered to the verso.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
