A mixed media sculpture titled Screaming Pope part of the HMS series by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), created 2010. This work features an abstracted figure using a mixture of found objects, textiles, paper, and wood. Alternate titles include Screaming Pope (I’m Innocent) or Money for Mercy. An attached label provides the title, date, and dimensions of the work in ink. While not signed by the artist, the piece comes from the artist’s estate. Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
