A mixed media sculpture titled Helmet Head in Cage from the HMS series by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2009. The piece features a humanoid face with rounded features placed within a cage-like structure comprised of branches painted in black. The figure is placed on a canvas with an oval shape and painted with gestural brushstrokes. An informational label is affixed to the upper area of the piece.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
