A first edition bronze sculpture of a Native American man by J. Michael Wilson (American, b. 1935), executed in 1988. The muscular figure raises a cow skull in his right hand his face to the sky and his body leaning backward intensely. A bear skin in his left hand drapes along the rocks he stands upon. Feathers, necklaces, and jewelry adorn his powerful body and hang from his clothing in intense detail. The sculpture is presented upon a walnut plinth and signed and dated in sgraffito to the back side and numbered 1 out of an edition of 24.
J. Michael Wilson was born in 1953 in Santa Monica, California. He first studied Animal Science at California Polytechnic University in 1971 and eventually studied life-drawing and sculpture at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. He went on to apprentice with Albert Friscia in Rome. Upon returning to the US, Wilson began a long career of sculpting that would include commissions from from Paramount Pictures, the University of San Diego, the California Thoroughbred Breeder’s Association, Del Mar racetrack, the Divine Mercy Cathedral in Stockbridge, Mass., and more.
