Antique Southern Cherry Sugar Chest, Circa 1830-1850

An antique southern cherry sugar chest, circa 1830-1850. The half-blind dovetailed case features a rectangular, hinged lid with breadboard ends and applied, edge molding opening to a vacant interior with divider grooves. Directly below is a molded base with four aligned, dovetailed drawers, all of which have poplar linings and cockbeaded fronts. The chest rises on block-and-turned, tapered legs ending in ring-turned cuffs.
This chest is in the regional style of Central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. It is unmarked by the maker.

- refinished; chest is screwed into base; missing interior dividers as well as the interior lock mechanism and hasp; hinges reset with repairs to backboard mounts; drawer knobs are later, two of which are broken; two drawers with mouse chew marks to secondaries; back of case and base with heat distressing/charring; front panel of chest with a small diamond-shaped patch and a shrinkage crack along the lower edge; other minor surface wear and imperfections as would be expected.
