Item Details
Provenance
Purchased from artist by consignor.
An acrylic painting on wood panel by celebrated American folk artist Mose Tolliver (1925-2006). This work features a stylized female figure with two additional appendages emerging between her spread legs, in the manner often seen in Tolliver’s Moose Lady paintings. The work is signed in the artist’s usual manner with a backward ‘s’ to the lower left. Surrounded by a painted blue border, the composition remains unframed.
Born in Alabama, self-taught Outsider artist Mose Tolliver began painting after a work accident left his legs severely injured. He is known for his brightly colored compositions featuring simplistic forms and shapes often portraying abstract figures, animals, and nature. His works have been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, among other institutions.
