An oil painting on canvas titled Amos by American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904 – 1997), created in 1984. This work features a nearly nude male figure seated in a modern ovoid chair, set in an interior space with prominent green drapery against the wall. The work is portrayed with dark outlines and loose expressionistic brushstrokes exhibiting textural impasto and suppressed detail throughout the modernist composition. It is signed and dated to the lower left and presented in a gray painted wood frame. A descriptive label is present to the verso.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
