John Dominique Oil Painting on Card Landscape

An oil painting on card by California painter John Dominique (Swedish/American, 1893-1994). Obscured by a wild array of lively colors is a landscape scene with three trees to the central space. Colors flow and fuse applied in bold, flat palette strokes. Signed to the lower right, ‘Dominique.’ Presented in a gilt wood frame with reeded top and sight moulding.

Dominique was born in Virserum, Sweden in 1893 and came to the united states with his family in 1898. Settling in Oregon. he started his career as a typesetter and later a cartoonist for the local newspaper. His formal training includes classes the Portland Art Museum in 1913, the Institute of Art in San Francisco from 1915-1916, and the Van Sloun School of Painting in 1917. Dominique’s style can be described as a long transition from impressionist to more abstract expressionist works.
