An original watercolor painting on heavy artist’s paper by Raoul Monory. Buildings line the waterfront with a partial view of a pedestrian bridge in this c. 1940s painting. Signed in medium lower right. Unframed.

A French artist, Colonel Raoul Monory was born in 1886 in Thouars (Deux Sevres), France. Monory did not begin life as an artist, but instead attended military school. During his service in the French military, Monory achieved the rank of colonel and was also named an Officer of the Legion of Honor. After World War I, Monory began to take watercolor classes and over the years became an accomplished artist. He studied under the Breton artist Jean Gobaille for a time, as well as the French Orientalist artist Etienne Dinet. Monory and Dinet’s artistic collaboration began in France, but then continued in Algiers where Monory lived for several years.
