An oil painting on Masonite board of a nude female figure by well-listed Indiana-based artist Lawrence McConaha (1894-1962). This work features a young nude woman with her eyes closed, sprawled across a fabric-covered surface. The composition is portrayed with hashes of subdued colors and rough textural impasto throughout. The work is not signed by the artist, originating from a collection of the artist’s work from Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC. The artist’s surname is inscribed to the board verso. The composition is presented without framing.

Born in Indiana, Lawrence McConaha learned telegraphy as a teenager and served as a telegraph operator in the U.S. army during World War I. He began painting in the 1930s after seeing Paul Gauguin’s work at the Art Institute of Chicago, which inspired him to travel to Tahiti. It was during his stay in Tahiti that he began painting vigorously and began his career as a serious artist. McConaha became known for his post-impressionistic figural compositions and paintings of Indiana landscapes.
