Emily Reid Gouache Painting on Salt Print of a Limoges Enamel Ewer
Item Details
A gouache painting over a salt paper print on paper of an enameled limoges ewer by Emily Reid (19th-century), executed in 1882. This artist recreates the intricacy of the ewer with fine meticulous details in rich cobalt and gold colors. The work is signed and dated to the lower left, ‘Emily Reid 1882 / S.K. Mus.’ It is mounted to foam core with off-white matting and wrapped in acetate. A handwritten descriptive label is present to the upper right of the mat. A label to the verso states that the work is painted after the original ewer in the Louvre Museum.
The annotation ‘S.K. Mus’, as marked in this composition, refers to the South Kensington Museum in London now referred to as the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the late 19th-century it became popular to hand color photographs of highly decorative objects, especially those found in museums such as South Kensington and the Louvre.
