Edgar Yaeger Mixed Media Painting "Wine and Pear Still Life"

Item Details

A mixed media painting on paper titled Wine and Pear Still Life by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1959. Rendered in gouache and watercolor, this still life features a wine glass, a pear, and another piece of fruit arranged on a wood table, set in front of a railed structure and a green curtain. The composition is portrayed in a post-impressionist style with vibrant colors, dark outlines, and and sense of flatness throughout the composition. It is signed and dated in graphite to the lower left. The work is presented under glass, double-matted with burgundy and gold-tone mats, and housed in a distressed gray wood frame with carved abstract patterns. A descriptive label is present to the verso. The composition is included with a catalog and brochure about the artist from Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
