Handmade Kuba Cloth Panel with Embroidery and Resist Dye

A hand-woven and embroidered Kuba cloth panel made by the Bakuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This piece is made from fabric handwoven from the raffia palm and either left natural or dyed a near-black color. The cloth is created by stitching together a checkered pattern of white and black pieces that are then embroidered with eyelets and linear motifs in contrasting threads. It is finished with upper and lower border strips that have been tied and resist-dyed in stripes. It is unframed and unsigned.

- wrinkling and folds from storage; tears in border strips; some fraying at edges; loose threads throughout, with evidence of repair in the weave.
