Hmong "Paj Ntaub" Textiles

A group of three “Paj Ntaub” or “flower cloth” textiles from the Hmong culture of people located in Southern China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, as well as a significant population in the United States. These handmade textiles feature scrolling, spiral, and geometric forms radiating from the center point in reverse appliqué with embroidered detail. One piece features the ’elephant’s foot’ pattern in a palette of red and sea green with white, green and pink stitching. The second features a cross with spiral ‘flowers’ in a palette of teal and purple with orange and green stitching, and the third features a star with a spiral flower border in forest green, gray, and white with orange and purple stitching. All three have a second saw-tooth border and plain fabric border hem, and they are lined with cotton fabric to the verso. These panels are unframed and unsigned.

Condition

- light wear with fold lines from storage; some loose threads; minor accretion to surface.
