Kyle Kinser Hand-Made Walnut Writing Desk with Two Drawers

Item Details

A hand-made walnut writing desk with two drawers by Kyle Kinser (American, b. 1951). The frame features a rectangular, paneled top overhanging a straight apron with two aligned, dovetailed drawers. The fronts are fitted with floral-carved knobs and they open to poplar linings. The table rises on four square, tapered legs. There are no maker’s marks.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Kinser earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from College of the Redwoods, Fort Bragg, where he trained under well-known cabinetmaker James Krenov (Swedish, 1920-2009). His work has been featured in a number of domestic and international exhibitions, including The Woods at Hand: Furniture by Kyle Kinser from 1982 to 1997 at the Illinois State Museum, Remains of a Day at the Andrew Bae Gallery in Chicago, and most recently The Quiet Object: The Cabinetry of Kyle Kinser at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He currently operates Kyle Kinser Wood Works in Makanda, Illinois.

Provenance: From the estate of celebrated blacksmith and Southern Illinois University professor Brent Kington (American, 1934-2013), who obtained the table directly from Kinser. In addition to being neighbors and friends, the two artists collaborated during the mid 1990s.
