Antique Painted Pine Stepback Cupboard, Circa 19th Century

An antique painted pine stepback cupboard, circa 19th century. The one-piece case retains an old, blue- and red-painted surface. It features a flared cornice above four open shelves over a projecting base with two blind doors. The doors are constructed with breadboard ends and they open to a two-shelf interior. One of the backboards retains an incised mark reading ‘SWM’.

Condition
- blue paint is old but not original, as there are green and yellow/cream layers underneath; red paint on doors has a light blue layer below it; backboards retain old salmon-colored and cream paint; scattered flaking/losses to painted surfaces; upper shelves are applied with later plate support strips along the back edges; three of the upper shelves have electrified lighting strips added to the undersides with a few small holes cut through the backboard to accommodate the cords; lights unable to be tested as the cords have been cut; left side panel with a long shrinkage crack running almost the entire length as well as a patch repair; one door has a repair near the bottom hinge; door knobs with chips; other wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use.
