1867 John Hunt & Robert Roskell Cellini Style Sterling Silver Claret Jug

A 1867 Cellini style sterling silver claret jug by London silversmiths John Samuel Hunt and Robert Roskell. This fine Victorian piece has an ovoid shaped well with a thin neck, a long curved spout, an ornate scrolled handle with a woman figure, a gold washed interior, and a pedestal style base with laurel leaf accents, Renaissance designs after the work of Benvenuto Cellini (Italian, 1500-1571). The exterior features intricate chased designs with motifs consisting of acanthus leaves, plants, scrolls, animals, and statuesque figures in addition to masks throughout the exterior and to the front of the spout. The base is stamped to the side with the crowned topped square cartouche containing ‘IH & RR’ next to four hallmarks of a lion passant for sterling silver, a leopard’s head for London, a Gothic ‘m’ for 1867, and a Queen Victoria duty mark. Condition

- minor surface wear including marks, scratches, and tarnishing. Originally would have had a silver-mounted cork stopper, which is now missing.
