An oil painting on canvas titled I Wonder as I Wander by well-listed American western artist Ross Stefan (1934-1999), created in 1969. Portrayed with vibrant colors and loose impressionistic brushstrokes, this work features a man wandering through a lush hilly forest on horseback, leading another saddled horse at his side. Green trees and foliage fill the foreground while rocky terrains extend throughout the distant background as far as the eye can see. The painting is signed to the lower left. The title, date, and artist’s signature are present to the stretcher verso. The composition is presented in a beige painted wood frame with a canvas liner.
Born in Milwaukee, Ross Stefan settled in Arizona in 1953 and studied art at the University of Arizona. Known for his paintings of American western and southwestern subjects, he is often described as a ‘Southwestern impressionist’. Stefan’s work has been exhibited by numerous institutions including the Denver Art Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Phippen Museum, among many others.
