An acrylic painting on canvas board titled Rocks & Rapids by Cincinnati-based artist Carolyn Zimmerman (1903 – ?), created in 1964. Portrayed with loose expressionistic brushstrokes, this work features a close view of rapids running through a rocky creek, located in Lester Park, Duluth. The work is signed to the lower right; handwriting to the verso of the cardboard backing reads the title and date. The composition is presented under two layers of fabric covered mats and remains unframed.

Carolyn Zimmerman was born in Walton, Indiana and was the wife of prominent Cincinnati artist Carl Zimmerman. She started her formal artistic training at the Cincinnati Art Academy and studied with French sculptor and painter Antoine Bourdelle as well as Madame Levy-Ginsborg in Paris. Zimmerman’s body of work primarily focuses on forested landscapes. She and her husband were members of the Cincinnati School of Painters.

Condition

- some wear to mats includes stains, snags, and some fraying scattered throughout; minor wear along mat edges; mat presentation is taped together and could use greater securing.
