Antique American Eastlake Cylinder Desk

An antique American Eastlake cylinder desk. This small late 19th century cylinder desk is configured in the manner of a Davenport desk with four stacking drawers concealed behind a panel on the right side of the the narrow base. Constructed of walnut and burl walnut veneer, it features a floral incised carved three sided galley decorated with turnings and finials on the top of the desk below which is the solid framed cylinder top veneered with a sheet of burl walnut veneer and two turned wooden knobs. The cylinder opens to reveal a leather inset pull out writing surface and interior fitted with five pigeon holes. Below the cylinder is a full-width drawer fitted with two pressed brass plates and pulls, which is supported from the underside by two incised carved griffins atop two shaped supports flanked by incised panels on the front, with similarly incised panel on the left side and two similarly incised panels on the reverse. On the right side is a hinged cabinet door with a similarly incised panel that opens to reveal four stacked drawers, each with knapp or scallop-and-dowel joints (in use 1871-1900) and a single turned wood knob. The piece resting on two shaped horizontal legs each on two castors. No apparent maker’s mark.
