A cold-painted bronze sculptural ash receiver by Franz Xaver Bergmann (Austrian, 1861–1936). Standing upon a polished agate plinth is a fearsome Native American Indian figure poised for attack. The man holds a sharp spear in one hand with a feathered finial and in the other hand is shield. The plinth has a recessed ovular space for ash receiving and the figure is bolted down. Signed to the verso of the shield with a letter ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche and ‘Geschütz’ patent stamp below.
Often noted for his erotic works, Bergmann inherited a small bronze foundry in 1900 from is father whom had started the factory forty years prior. He was the foundry owner and often employed temporary sculptors and workers to cold-paint the pieces cast in Vienna.
