An oil painting on canvas titled When the Price of a Letter Came High by listed American artist Joe Ferrara (1932 – 2004), created in 1996. Portrayed with loose brushstrokes and suppressed detail, this work features a man in Western attire riding a horse in the foreground of an expansive American western landscape; additional figures on horseback are faintly visible in the distance. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right. It is presented in a distressed wood frame with a medium brown finish and carved low-relief patterns. The title of the work is handwritten on a label to the verso; a tag is attached to the hanging wire with handwritten information about the Pony Express.

Born in Connecticut, Joe Ferrara earned his BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He is best known for his paintings of American western scenes and his Winchester Calendar series that he began in 1967. Ferrara was also commissioned by the Winchester Firearms Company to design and paint their commemorative gun box sleeves and medallions.
