Continental School Oil Painting on Canvas After Jan van Os Floral Still Life

A Continental School oil painting on canvas of a floral still life after Dutch painter Jan van Os (1744-1808). This large composition features an abundant arrangement of various vibrant flowers set on a flat surface and contrasted against a dark background. The painting is signed ‘Jan van Os’ to the lower right. It is presented in an elaborate gesso wood frame with scrolling foliate moulding. A metal plate is affixed to the lower part of the frame, engraved ‘Jan van Os’.
Condition
- rubbing and stains along edges of composition; small spots of paint loss and chipping scattered throughout painting, especially visible to upper left and upper right; small white spots scattered throughout left side; craquelure throughout; heavy layer of varnish overtop; areas of in painting scattered throughout; cracks, stains, and small chips scattered throughout frame; varnish and adhesive residue visible throughout frame; finish loss throughout most of frame; painting is loose in frame and needs securing.
