Zuni Pueblo Pottery Owls Signed Q. Kalestewa and R.K.

A pair of storyteller pottery owls by Zuni Pueblo artist Quanita (Juanita) Kalestewa (b. 1932) and artist R.K. These miniature polychrome owls feature an ochre and white design, with the larger owl including three small owl children, marked ‘R.K. Zuni, NM 2010’ and the other owl including two small owl children, marked ‘Q.K. Zuni.’ R.K. is thought to represent one of Q. Kalestewa’s children.
Quanita Kalestewa and her husband worked in both silver and pottery. Quanita learned from her mother, Nellie Bica, and has been making pottery since the 1940s. She and her husband Jack Kalestewa make polychrome pottery in the traditional method.
