Oil on Paper in the Manner of David Burliuk "Portrait of Max with John's Guitar"

Item Details

An oil painting on paper titled Portrait of Max (with John’s Guitar) attributed to well listed artist David Burliuk (American/Ukrainian, 1882–1967). It is signed illegibly and is attributed without grounds to the verso. This Abstract-Expressionist style painting emphasizes texture throughout the composition. It is rendered in a palette of pastel hues and depicts areas of layered pigment, outlined with sharp linework. It is signed and dated ‘’28’ by hand in black to the lower left corner. This painting is mounted on a textured white background and presented behind glass in a gold tone wooden frame with a paper backing and metal hanging wire to the verso. Inscribed by hand to the verso is the title, date, and artist’s name.

David Burliuk is renowned as the “father of Futurism,” and a major contributor to Modern Art in the early part of the 20th century. Born in 1882 near the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, Burliuk studied in Odessa and Kazan, at the Munich Royal Academy of Arts, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work is a mix of Fauvist, Cubist, and Futurist styles, which he combined with his interest in nature and a love of Ukrainian folklore.
