19th Century Inlaid Mahogany Mechanical Cylinder Music Box
Item Details
A 19th century inlaid mahogany mechanical cylinder music box. The casing features a hinged lid with a matched mahogany veneer border, smaller inlaid borders, a central foliate medallion and a black painted ogee edge. The body of the coffin-shaped casing features an additional matched veneer border and a central foliate, bow and rod design to the front finished in olive, black, sage and rust tones with a brass escutcheon. The sides feature a dark and medium stained striped finish and are both finished with ornate gold tone metal bails and pulls with seashell and arabesque designs in relief. The casing rests on a painted black base finished with four bracket feet. The interior of the box features three compartments; the left with a manual crank and other gearing; the middle with a hinged glass paned lid which includes the cylinder and other gearing; and the right which features the silver tone metal toggle switch controls. The piece includes a single cylinder of music, featuring approximately 4-6 tunes.
