Ray Morimura Signed Limited Edition Woodblock on Paper "Yamanohanashi"

A signed limited edition woodblock print on paper titled Yamanohanashi by listed contemporary Japanese artist Ray Morimura (b. 1948). This multi-colored work features a stylized hilly landscape populated with multiple terrains, houses, animals, and nature motifs; the composition is portrayed with abstract delineations, patterns, and simplified shapes. The work is signed to the lower right margin and marked with a red seal; it is also numbered 8 out of an edition of 50 to the lower right, and titled to the lower left. Presented under glass with black matting and housed in a gold-tone wood frame. A frame label from Kato is adhered to the verso.

Although he studied oil painting at Tokyo Gauge University, Ray Morimura later turned to woodblock techniques as his preferred medium, drawing inspiration from Shigeru Hatsuyama and Sumio Kawakami. He is known for using oil-based inks in his multi-colored woodblock compositions often printed on mulberry bark kozo paper. He has exhibited internationally, and his work has been collected by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Yale University; and the University of Maryland.
