Bernard Buffet Signed Limited Edition Drypoint Etching on Paper "Cabanas"

Item Details

A signed limited edition drypoint etching on paper titled Cabanas by celebrated French Expressionist Bernard Buffet (1928-1999). This work features a coastal town scene portrayed with sketchy black delineations. The work is signed by hand in graphite to the lower right margin; it is numbered 56 out of an edition of 75 to the lower left margin. The composition is presented under glass with linen-covered matting, and housed in a beveled black wood frame. A Certificate of Authenticity from Associated American Artists and the artist’s obituary in the New York Times are adhered to the verso.

Born in Paris, Bernard Buffet studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He is a renowned French Expressionist whose work remarkably rivaled Picasso’s, particularly in the 1950s. His paintings and illustrations often feature gaunt spindly figures, bleak sketchy cityscapes, chilling still lifes, or tortured depictions of Christ. Buffet’s work is represented by numerous institutions including the Tate Gallery in London, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville Paris, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.
