Antique American Victorian Eastlake Walnut Secretary

Item Details

An antique American Victorian walnut secretary in an Eastlake style, circa 1890. This secretary is composed of walnut and figured walnut veneers with the original finish. It features shelf with a three-sided gallery with a central relief carved medallion of stylized lilies between a repeating pattern of pierced roundels incised with an X. The top shelf is supported by two floral incised and reeded supports flanking an open shelf decorated with a figured walnut veneer panel between incised lines. Beneath the two shelves is a locking fold down door with figured walnut veneer that serves as a writing surface and reveals a fitted interior when down. The desk is supported by a cabinet with a single full-width drawer over two stacked drawers to the left and one cabinet door to the right that opens to a single shelf. The drawers and door feature figured walnut veneer panels between incised lines, diamond-shaped carved escutcheons, and embossed brass plates and ring pulls. The drawers are constructed with knapp or scallop-and-dowel joints, which were in use between 1871 and 1900. The piece rests on a molded plinth base. The key is not included. There are no visible maker’s marks.
