Hand-Knotted Afghani Baluch Pictorial Area Rug/Wall Hanging
Item Details
An Afghani Baluch pictorial area rug/wall hanging. This wool and camel hair work is hand-knotted in a palette of camel, mocha, royal blue, tangerine, and red. It features a mirrored design that incorporates rectilinear depictions of eight finely dressed women, two with elaborately festooned horses, over a camel-colored field. Amid the figures, and adorning their clothing, are numerous trees of life in different shapes and styles as well as Baluchi frond motifs. Long earrings and adorned hair are prominent features of the women. The main border features a complex repeating pattern including stylized split leaves, flowerheads, hexagons, squares, and other symbolic elements. Selvedges are double overcast in black, the rug finishing at each end with a tan kilim skirt and long camel-hair warp fringe. A leather strip with hanging hooks is sewn to the underside. The piece is labeled on the reverse.
