An original ink and halftone transfer political cartoon by Hugh Haynie of Jimmy Carter. It depicts a grinning Jimmy Carter flying a biplane with a huge turbojet engine attached to the plane’s tail. ‘Symbolism’ is written on the side of the engine over a toothy smile and the caption reads ‘So . . who cares if it looks a li’l funny? This ol’ baby really moves!’ The caption, the signature with a 1977 Courier-Journal copyright, and ‘Distributed by L.A. Times Syndicate’ are cut from paper and attached to the cartoon. It is also inscribed ‘To Bill’ and signed in ink by hand to the mat. The cartoon covered in protective plastic in a blue paper mat is mounted under glass with a gray blue mat in a black wooden frame that is wired for hanging.
Condition
- discoloration to the halftone transfer patterns and cut out caption; scuffs, minor scratches to the frame; adhesive residue on the glass; residue under the glass to the bottom left, slight stains to the backing paper.
